Exceptional Student Education

Last Updated: 3/22/2022 5:50 PM

In Florida, children who have special learning needs because of a disability are called exceptional students. The special help they are given at school is called exceptional student education (ESE).  The purpose of ESE is to help each child with a disability to progress in school and and to prepare for life after school.

About Us

Jefferson County School District serves students with disabilities and students who are gifted.  The mission of Exceptional Student Education (ESE) is to provide quality services that support effective  learning opportunities for all exceptional children. Students from age 3 through 21 who meet eligibility requirements receive special education services. Jefferson County School District provides a full continuum of services, which include but are not limited to educational, vocational and behavioral support, to meet the needs of eligible students while allowing access to general education instruction with non-disabled peers to the maximum extent appropriate for each student.

Each year, the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) surveys parents of children with an Individual Educational Plan (IEP) to determine how well your child’s school is partnering with you and promoting your involvement in your child’s education. All states must collect this data as part of their State Performance Plan, as required under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Your feedback is important in helping the state and local school systems continue improving educational programs for children with special needs. Thank you!

All information provided will remain confidential. You may submit one online survey for each child receiving services.
